Before you apply, spend five minutes checking these things

A quick read of the right details can save you from applications that were never a fit and help you put real effort into the ones that are.

It is easy to see a familiar job title, click apply, and start filling in the form before you have really read the role. That can feel productive. It is also how people spend an hour on a role they would have skipped after five minutes of attention.

You do not need to analyse every line of a posting. You do need a quick check before the application pulls you in.

Read the first few responsibilities

The title is often the least useful part of a job description. Two roles called software engineer can ask for completely different work. One may be mainly backend services. Another may be client support with a little scripting. Look at the first responsibilities and ask whether you can picture yourself doing that work most days.

Find the one requirement they repeat

Companies repeat the thing they care about. If Python appears once in a long skills list, it may be nice to have. If it appears in the summary, the responsibilities, and the qualifications, it is probably central to the role. That tells you what should be easy to find on your resume.

Check the basics before the effort

  • Location and whether the role is really remote, hybrid, or on-site
  • Experience level and whether the examples ask for work you have actually done
  • Whether the job is still open and was posted recently
  • Any work authorization or location requirement that clearly rules you out

This is not about finding a perfect match. Very few early-career roles are perfect. It is about spotting the jobs where you have a real reason to apply before you spend time tailoring a resume and answering questions.

Keep one sentence about why it fits

Before you submit, write one plain sentence in your tracker: why this job belongs on your list. It might be "uses the backend stack from my internship" or "junior data role in a city I can work in." That note is useful later when the company calls and you have applied to twenty other places since then.
